How to Make Kitchen Countertops Shine

The techniques that keep granite countertops shiny differ from tile or other surfaces.
Shiny countertops make a kitchen look clean and ready for the next big meal. But the method to clean them -- then make them shine -- depends upon the materials in the countertop. One method does not fit them all. From laminate to granite countertops, applying the right cleaning techniques can give your countertops back their shine.

Solid Surface Shine

Solid-surfaced countertops made from polyester and acrylics do not require a lot of maintenance to make them look clean and shiny unless the countertop has a matte or semigloss finish to begin with. Apply ammonia-based cleaners or a teaspoon of mild dish soap mixed with water to clean and shine the surface. Avoid cleaners that contain residues, which could cloud the surface of the countertop.

Polished Rock

Marble and granite countertops contain a natural shine to them after they are polished. You do need to seal the countertop to prevent oil or food stains impregnating the surface. Carbonated beverages, fruit juices and other natural acids can eat away at the surface of marble if they are left in place. A steam cleaner gets both surface types super clean; otherwise, a few squirts from a pH-balanced dishwashing liquid mixed with a quart of water does the job. Add 1/4 cup of isopropyl alcohol to the mixture for shiny and germ-free countertops. Reapply the sealant yearly.

Ceramic Tiles Big or Small

Kitchen countertops made from ceramic tiles require regular upkeep to protect the grout and tiles from appearing grungy. After cleaning, seal the grout to protect it from stains and excessive wear. For standard tile cleaning without leaving a film, add 1/4 cup of white vinegar to 1 gallon of warm water, but increase the vinegar to a full cup if the tile countertop appears dull. Clean the entire surface, rinsing with clean water. Finish up with a wipe down of club soda to make the tiles shine.

Laminate Countertops

Although not as durable as other countertop surfaces, laminate is an inexpensive choice to costlier countertop surfaces. Protect your laminate countertop by chopping or cutting items on a cutting board rather than directly on the surface. Clean the surface with a few squirts of mild detergent mixed in a bowl of warm water, then wipe down with a clean cloth. Rinse with another cloth and wipe it dry. Do not allow water to flood the surface of laminate or get near seams, as this can cause the material to swell. Do not use over-the-counter cleaners that contain residues, as these can leave a streaked finish on the surface.

Ten Car Cleaning Secrets from the Pros!

The average commute to work across the world is 40 minutes, one way.

That’s 80 minutes a day. That is A LOT of time to be driving – and a crazy amount of time to be stuck in your car. It probably feels even longer if your car is dirty or smells … not like roses. You probably dread your commute. Who wouldn’t? But there is no reason for you to dread even getting in your car too! I’ve discovered a bunch of cool and creative ways to clean your car that I can’t wait to share with you. Keep reading, try some (or all!) of them and hey – maybe soon you will smile instead of sighing when you hop into the car each day.

Exterior car cleaning routine

If you like to hand wash your car, here’s something you’ve got to start doing. Use two buckets to wash instead of just one. Find an exterior car cleaning product that suits your vehicle’s needs. I’d suggest going to the automotive department at your local big box store and finding out which product would work best for you. Make up that mixture per the bottle’s direction, in one bucket, and fill another other one with clean, warm water.
After each pass on your car with the sponge, dunk it in the bucket with just water, squeeze it out well (you can do this more than once if needed to get the sponge clean) and then you’re good to go to dunk it back in the bucket with soapy water. Car wash pros know to use two buckets because if you use only one bucket all you’re doing is taking dirt off the car, getting that dirt in the bucket with soapy water and putting it back on your car.

Beautify Tires, Rims or Hubs

In the time since I started Clean My Space I’ve tried a lot of things (some successful, others not really) to remove grease. And every time, I always end up circling back to reliable blue Dawn – yes, the dish soap. There are so many other uses for it than just on dishes, including getting grease off your car’s tires and hubs.
Fill a bucket with one teaspoon of Dawn and a gallon of warm water. Dip a soft sponge (use a new sponge and make it just for your tires and hubs) into the bucket, and squeeze out any extra water and soap. Scrub the rims and tires until all the visible grease and grime is gone. You will want to use a separate bucket of just clean water for this too, yes – it’s a similar concept to the first point. Same reason as with the car body – so you’re not dunking the dirty sponge right back into the soap and water. Once you’ve scrubbed the tires and rims enough with soap and water and you’re satisfied with how clean they are rinse them off with warm water from a hose or a new bucket of clean, warm water. The last step is dry the tires and rims with a clean, soft towel.

Bugs be gone

You’re driving on the highway and – SPLAT! – There’s one bug. SPLAT! There’s another. SPLAT! SPLAT! SPLAT! There are three more! It’s gross and unattractive to look at, and windshield washer fluid doesn’t do anything to remove them. What’s a driver to do? It’s easy – grab a bottle of cola and carefully apply some onto the affected windshield areas. Now, be super careful not to get any on paint because it will burn right through the finish.
Once the cola has had a moment to do its thing, use a clean rag or mesh bag from onions to remove the bugs without scratching the windshield. Rinse well with a hose or a bucket of clean water and this is important! If you omit washing off the sticky, syrupy drink off and you might as well post a welcome sign for the dirt and dust that’ll be attracted to the stickiness. Cola: it’s not just for drinking!

Squeaky door fix

Squeak… squeak … squeak: If your car doors sound like little mice, the fix is in your kitchen. Olive oil is a great lubricant and available in a pinch, especially if you don’t have (or choose not to use) and industrial lubricant. All you need to do is moisten a cotton ball with olive oil and wipe it on each door’s hinge. Use a new cotton ball for each door (it won’t look snow white after if you know what I mean). You can also fill a spray bottle with oil and give each hinge a few squirts.

Tar spot remover

If your car is covered in tar (look! I’m a poet!) mayonnaise (yep, you’re reading that right) will take it off without damaging the car’s finish. Apply a teeny bit (a few teaspoons) to a clean cotton rag. Rub the mayonnaise on the tar until it covers it completely. Wait at least 5 minutes, but no more than 10, and wipe off the mayonnaise with a different clean cloth. Mayonnaise is an amazing ingredient because it is strong enough to take off tar, but gentle enough so it won’t damage wax paint. And you can make egg salad with it after – well, not the same mayo…you know what I mean!

Deep clean car carpets

Before reaching for a vacuum, and if you want to try to avoid using one, you can try this instead. Keep a stiff bristle brush in your car (some folks use a nail brush to do this), and if you see ground in dirt, small stones, mud stains, etc. simply take the scrub brush and using quick, one directional motions, brush the dirt out of the carpets and onto the ground. The action combined with the stiff bristles pushes dirt and debris out of the carpet, saving you from at least one more day of having to vacuum.

Foggy headlights

For this trick you’ll need:
1) Old pantyhose
2) Toothpaste
Make dirty or fogged up headlights shine with toothpaste. Squeeze a bit onto your old pantyhose – which is soft enough so it won’t scratch or damage anything – and scrub away. Elbow grease required, but it’s worth it. (Don’t be grossed out or ashamed by the dirt that comes off). Rinse with water, wipe it again and dry completely with a soft towel. Now, you’ll have shinier headlights!

Deodorize the car

Leave an open bag of charcoal under one of the seats in your car for a couple of days; it will absorb any weird smells and you won’t be embarrassed to carpool or let friends in your car, or cringe at the thought of being in it yourself. Best of all, you can still use the charcoal for barbecuing after. You can also give the old standby, baking soda, a try. Sprinkle it generously onto the floor and seats (only if they’re made of fabric, not leather). Let it hang out there for a few hours, or overnight, and vacuum up. Be sure to get in all the little cracks and crevices. The baking soda will suck up strange odors and make the car smell, well, like nothing!

Car sickness quick fix

Believe it or not, club soda! Did your dog/kid/spouse get a little carsick? Use paper towel to scoop it all up, throw in a plastic bag and toss it out in your nearest (outdoor) garbage can. Dilute the stain that’s left behind with a small amount of club soda. Pour it slowly and directly onto the stain, let it hang out there for no more than five minutes and gently blot the stain until it’s dry using a dry, clean paper towel. Repeat if necessary.
BONUS: You can also use club soda to get bird poop off your windshield. Pour right onto the droppings and wait a few minutes. Turn on your wipers and that’s it!

Static car interior

Get static electricity on your side with latex gloves.   If you have a pet that a) sheds like crazy and b) travels in your car, odds are there is pet hair everywhere in your car – also a cause of funky smells. Put on a pair of latex gloves, dampen it slightly and rub your hand in one direction, against the grain, on the carpet and upholstery. The static electricity will drag your pet’s hair up to the surface for it to be vacuumed, just like that!

How To Lose Weight While Cleaning Your House

By carol stanley

Gather Your Cleaning Supplies

How Can I Lose Weight

Lose weight while creating a clean house. You can exercise very effectively while you are busy working hard to have a spotless house. Most of us do not look forward to cleaning house when there are many other interesting things to do. Save yourself a trip to the gym, and incorporate some fun exercise and dance moves while you are cleaning. Have a clean house and a trim body--now that is a daunting thought. Organize your cleaning supplies and attack the house with vigor. An hour of cleaning is like an hour of most exercise routines if you move fast and do some of these different moves.

Get Organized with Your Cleaning Supplies

Get into some loose and comfy clothing before starting the task. Put on some music to include some of your favorite songs. Gather all the equipment and cleaning solutions you will need, and you are good to go. Don't worry what room you will do first, just whatever hits your fancy at the moment. You can jump around doing a task here and there, or do one room at a time. The house will get clean and you will get your exercise. And you won't have to ask yourself, "how can I lose weight"?

Get Out and Dance Your Heart Out

Start the Dance and clean Routine

Stretch your muscles thoroughly and do several knee bends before tackling the cleaning job.Check a video for some dance moves and try to incorporate some of the moves in your cleaning routine. Make it fun and you will look forward to your next dance and clean routine.

Let the Dusting Begin

With dust rags in both of your hands start dusting in any room of your choice. When dusting a table reach out over the table and rub back and forth vigorously. Bend down to dust the legs of the table. Remember to always bend your knees whenever reaching to protect your back. Follow this procedure on all the wood furniture. Dust corners and tackle all furniture and cabinets that need dusting. When you have finished with this do some jumping jacks and start on the next task at hand.

Have a bright clean bathroom

The Bathrooms--Clean Them Thoroughly

Most of us do not like to do the bathrooms. However with your new dance routine you will find yourself sailing through quickly. Get down on your knees, after doing a few warm-up knee bends. Get your rags with your favorite cleaning solution and vigorously clean the tub or lower part of the shower with both hands, moving to the music. Stand up and clean the shower doors, curtains and sides with your soapy rags. Squeeze out your rags and go over everything with a rag dipped in hot water.

Clean your sinks using the same circular motions. Remember to clean the counter tops to give a thorough cleaning. Clean your toilets and bend over get in the back. Remember to bend your knees.

Clean all the mirrors and chrome with a mixture of white vinegar and water--1 part vinegar to 10 parts of water. Use both of your hands using the same circular motion. Dry everything thoroughly with a microfiber rag.

Get down on your hands and knees and wash all the floors by hand with your vinegar water. You can stand back and admire your clean bathroom. Too bad you cannot admire it for long due to constant usage.

if you are feeling very ambitious clean out the drawers and get rid of old makeup and other cosmetics.

Dust free carpets

Vacuum the Carpet

Vacuuming can be excellent exercise. Just remember to bend your knees and don't hyper-extend. Do a few dance steps to the music and zoom around the house. Tense your arm muscles as you pull back with the vacuum for extra muscle resistance. Make sure to get in the corners. Add a little carpet deodorizer and vacuum once again.

Clean Floors

Mop The Floors and Keep Dancing

Put equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray your floor as you go. Using sweeping motions with the mop and be careful to bend the knees and not to hyper-extend your arms. Dance to the music. Keep rinsing your mop in the sink. After you are finished remember to scrub the sink. You may want to get down on the floor and wipe the corners and baseboards with a paper towel.

Miscellaneous Jobs

Cleaning blinds, windowsills, kitchen countertops, drawers and cupboards require the same technique. Use both hands with a rag in each one and use vigorous strokes. Whenever possible add some extra dance moves and arm exercises. Just keep moving, shaking and cleaning.

Time for a coffee break.

The finale

Pat yourself on the back as you got at least an hour of exercise and to boot--you have a clean house. Time to treat yourself to a coffee break and a little relaxation. Now you know how to clean house and lose weight. You can enjoy this wonderful experience again next week. You may also want to clean the fridge, pantry, drawers and closets. What a perfect house you will have.

10 Health Benefits Of A Clean House

Healthy Homes are homes that are safe, clean, and healthy for the people who live there. Many studies link health issues such as asthma, lead poisoning, and injury to hazards in the home. A hazard is a source of danger and can be anything that increases the risk of harm. Many hazards may be present in your home and should be addressed. Because many people in the United States spend over half of each day inside their homes, and children often spend up to 90 percent of their time indoors, the home plays an important role in health. Everyone deserves to be safe and healthy, but some of the most serious health problems for families can start in the home! A healthy home affects everyone, especially:

Children are more likely to be affected by hazards in the home because their bodies are still growing. Children play and crawl on the floor and often put things in their mouths. When compared to adults, relative to their body weight, children eat more food, drink more water, and breathe more air. For this reason, children often have greater contact with sources that may be harmful to their health. Children also depend on adults to make their homes safe.

Expecting mothers should live in a healthy home. Contaminants such as lead, pesticides, and tobacco smoke can be harmful to the health of the developing baby.

Seniors may be subject to trips and falls in the home. Common objects such as rugs, uneven flooring, poor lighting, and a lack of handrails can all be hazards for injury. By following the Seven Healthy Homes Principles shown in this booklet, you can help make your home a healthier place to live. These principles are simple ways to help create a healthier home for you and your family. You've probably heard people say, "Why clean the house if it's just going to get dirty again?" This excuse may ring true for some, but people should also know that there are more incentives to cleaning than just having a sparkling house. The act of cleaning has many physical, mental, and emotional benefits that may improve one's health. Check out these 10 health benefits of a clean house and get scrubbing!

Reduces allergies
Regular cleaning is the best way to reduce dust and other irritating allergens from the home. Chores like sweeping, dusting, and vacuuming dispose of dust, dust mites, pet dander, and dozens of other allergens that cause cold and flu-like symptoms. People with allergies, asthma, and respiratory problems can relieve their symptoms and breathe easier by keeping their house clean.

Every time you clean the house with disinfectants, you are killing bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that can compromise your health. These powerful cleansers target germs and bacteria, such as E. coli, staph, and salmonella that are responsible for many foodborne illnesses and infections. Sanitizing surfaces in the kitchen, bathroom, and other areas of the house will help protect you from these potentially dangerous bacteria.

Keeping your house clean provides more opportunities to detect mold growth and fix the problem in a timely manner. Mold can wreck havoc on people's health, causing allergic reactions, cold and flu-like symptoms, asthma attacks, and other severe health problems. Regular cleaning and inspections help control and prevent mold growth.

Keeping your house clean and organized can reduce the chance of injury by minimizing clutter and keeping things out of harm's way. Leaving loose items around like toys may increase the risk of trips and falls. Stacks of boxes and other large piles can easily fall on top of someone and injure them. Simply tidying up and organizing can make a huge difference in the overall safety of your home.

Both the act of cleaning and maintaining a clean house can help relieve and prevent unnecessary stress. A clean house makes maneuvering and finding things much easier. Easy cleaning like sweeping, doing the dishes, and making your bed will make your house look clean and ready for guests if the opportunity arises.

Wards off pests
In general, bugs and other household pests like warm, damp environments and they have a tendency to disguise themselves in dusty, untidy areas. Regular cleaning helps occupants discover pest problems and treat them accordingly. In addition to regular exterminations, simple chores like taking out the garbage, sweeping, and vacuuming keeps bugs and other pests from making your home their nesting ground.

Burns calories
Cleaning doesn't just make your home look spick and span, it also burns calories. Everything from sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and hand washing the dishes can make you work up a sweat and burn off calories. To increase your calorie burn, dance to your favorite tunes while cleaning the house for at least an hour.

Encourages cooking
A dirty and unorganized kitchen can deter people from cooking at home because they don't want to make the mess even worse. A clean kitchen is much more inviting than a messy one. Washing the dishes, wiping down the countertops, and cleaning out the refrigerator allow the kitchen to serve as a functional workspace where you can cook healthy meals for the whole family.

Improves mental state
Let's face it: there's nothing better than walking into a house that is clean and organized. In fact, the process of cleaning and de-cluttering has been known to provide many mental health benefits. From the physical movements to the completion of a task, people find cleaning very cathartic. It's also a great way to release frustration, anxiety, and anger.

Reduces health and safety hazards
A clean house can mean the difference between life and death. Those who live in an unsanitary environment are more susceptible to illnesses caused by bacteria, allergens, and pests. An untidy home can also be a safety hazard for its occupants. Clutter is a fire hazard and can physically trap occupants inside their homes, preventing them from escaping in an emergency. Cleaning frees up space and keeps messes from becoming serious hazards.
